Manganese-silicon alloy, as the most important type of ferroalloy (its demand accounts for about 50% of the total output of Ferroalloy) , is mainly used in the steel-making industry (90% -95% of manganese consumption) , as a deoxidizer and desulphurizer in the process of iron-making and steel-making, and for making alloys. The remaining 5-10 per cent of manganese is used in other industrial areas, for example, the chemical industry (which manufactures various manganese salts) , the light industry (for batteries, matches, paints, soaps, etc.) , the building materials industry (for colouring and discoloring agents in glass and ceramics) , the defense industry, the electronics industry, and environmental protection and agriculture and animal husbandry and so on.
Ferrosilicon and silicomanganese are the most widely used ferroalloys in steel-making process. They are mainly used as deoxidizer and alloying agent in steel-making to eliminate excess oxygen and sulfur in molten steel and to improve the quality and properties of steel. In recent years, the proportion of ferrosilicon and silicomanganese in consumption has changed greatly, because silicomanganese alloy can not only deoxidize, but also increase the content of manganese in steel and improve the strength of steel, therefore, the ratio of manganese-silicon alloy used as deoxidizer is gradually higher than that of ferrosilicon.
